Tonight all eyes will be on Texas starter Matt Garza and Pittsburgh hurler A.J. Burnett in the series finale Wednesday afternoon in Arlington. The reason is obvious – the playoffs race. It’s no secret that both starters will be counted on to help get their teams into postseason play in October. Their (Garza and Burnett) solid pitching could not come at a more crucial time. The Rangers trail the A’s by two games in the American League West and lead the race for the AL Wild Card. The Pirates are one back of the Cardinals in the National League Central and lead the NL Wild Card standings.

Garza is 9-4 with 3.70 ERA this year and Rangers‘ manager Ron Washington hopes that he will extend his wins count tonight with a quality pitching. We have to say that Garza is among the best pitchers in MLB when we talk about 1st innings performance – in his last 17 starts he has allowed a run in 1st inning only twice. This makes 88% chance of scoreless 1st inning for Pirates. This season Garza ptiched once against Pirates. It was on May 21st, when he was still member of Cubs squad, and in that game he limited the Pirates to 1 hit and no runs in 5 innings.

Burnett, who will oppose Garza tonight is 7-10 with 3.31 ERA this year and he is looking for double figures for a ninth straight season. When it comes to a tough game Pirates‘ manager Clint Hurdle, most of the cases, sends Burnett on the mound. That fact tells very much about the ability of Burnett to hold Pirates on track this season. In 1st innings Burnett has good stats and in the last 18 games, he has allowed a run in 1st inning 4 times. This makes 78% chance of scoreless 1st inning for Rangers. When we add Garza’s 88% it turns out that the combined chance is 83%, which is good number, don’t you think?

Obviously tonight we will have solid starting pitchers with oustanding stats in the opening innings, so take the Under and GL!
